Background: Fun Fact Part I: Campbell University has produced just two players taken before the third round of the MLB Draft in its history – Seth Johnson, a supplemental first rounder taken by the Rays in 2019, and John Posey, a second round pick by the Orioles all the way back in 1986. Fun Fact Part II: despite a lack of notable early round draft selections, the Fighting Camels produced a trio of notable big leaguers – Hall of Famer and spitball extraordinaire Gaylord Perry; 1970 AL Cy Young Award winner and three-time All-Star Jim Perry, and 2021 breakout All-Star and Silver Slugger Cedric Mullins.
Harrington, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander, and his teammate Zach Neto figure to add their names to the list of notable alums from Campbell University.
A two-sport star during his days at Southern Lee High School, Harrington stepped right into the Camels’ rotation as a true freshman in 2021. Making a total of 16 appearances, 14 of which coming via the start, he tossed 75.2 innings with 75 punch outs and 28 walks to go along with a 6-3 record and a 3.45 ERA.
Harrington’s production improved tremendously during his stellar showing in 2022: in 15 starts, the promising righty posted a phenomenal 111-to-18 strikeout-to-walk ratio with a 2.53 ERA and a 12-2 record in 92.2 innings of work.
Scouting Report: Consider the following:
- Since 2015, there have been 15 instances in which a Division I pitcher averaged at least 10.5 strikeouts and fewer than 1.8 walks per nine innings (min. 90 IP): David Peterson, Casey Mize, Clayton Andrews, Nick Sandlin, Frank German, Miller Hogan, Adam Scott, Dylan Dodd, Will Dion, Chad Dallas, Hunter Stanley, Parker Messick, Trey Dombroski, Tanner Hall, and – of course – Thomas Harrington.
After throwing a solid amount of strikes during his freshman season, Harrington honed in on the strike zone with laser-like precision during his breakout 2022 campaign. Above-average command of four pitches – fastball, curveball, slider, and a firm, running changeup, all of which grade out as above-average. Harrington doesn’t own the biggest of frames, but he’s efficient with his offerings and mechanics. He has the ceiling of a #4-type arm. He could be a very quality pick in the opening of the second round.
