Background: One of the younger draft-eligible college prospects in the 2022 draft class. Beavers, a well-built 6-foot-4, 206-pound outfielder, turned in a mediocre, COVID-shortened freshman season with the California Golden Bears in 2020, hitting .250/.333/.357 with one lone extra-base hit (a dinger) in 12 games. A product of Mission College Prep, Beavers had a bit of a coming out party during his sophomore campaign for Head Coach Mike Neu. In 55 games for the Pac-12 conference school, the then-20-year-old slugger batted .303/.401/.630 with 11 doubles, two triples, 18 homeruns, and 10 stolen bases (in 12 total attempts).

Beavers split the ensuing summer between Team USA and the Cape Cod League.

In nine games with the national club he batted a paltry .143/.333/.286 with a homerun. His eight games with the Cotuit Kettleers was only slightly better: .233/.286/.300.

This season Beavers turned in another Beavers-like showing for the Bears. In a career-best 56 games, the California-born outfielder slugged .291/.427/.634 with 16 doubles, three triples, 17 homeruns, and seven stolen bases.

Scouting Report: Consider the following:

  • Since 2011, here’s the list of Pac-12 hitters to bat between .280/.410/.575 and .310/.440/.650 in a season (250 PA): Chase Davis and Dylan Beavers.

Like Tennessee’s Jordan Beck, there’s a little bit of a swing-and-miss approach to Dylan Beavers, though (A) it’s not overly concerning and (B) Beavers’ approach at the plate last season took major strides in working the count. The young outfielder’s walk rate jumped from 12.7% in 2021 to 18.8% in 2022. Above-average power. Average speed. Very simple, low maintenance swing that belies the 55-grade thump he’s packing. League average starter potential, maybe a tick more.

Ceiling: 2.5-win player

Risk: Moderate

Grade: First Round
